My I Poem lesson plan…
The tiger I POEMS were a success…especially considering it was the first time they have ever wrote an I POEMS. Here are there poems. I printed the poems and they drew a picture at the top of their poem. Then I put all of their work together to make a class book. It is cute! I will bring it to class.
Now, I have placed their I poems on my class web page. (I couldn’t put all of them online because did not get parental permisson from some students.) Check it out at http://www.geocities.com/joanncrawford2002/tiger_I-Poems.html or you can go to http://www.alexander.k12.nc.us/ellen/Classroom.htm and click on Mrs. Hall. Then click on the tiger! I thought the children did a great job!
Amy,
Your plan looks good; you will need to add the component of a shared writing with your students. They will need to see how this happens. So, you’ve read a book about the Zoo, you choose another animal, read an informational text, chart important words and phrases, and with your students, CREATE an I POEM about the animal you choose. Then, they will be ready for the Tiger Plan. What do you think?

This is awesome. I love your rubric. I think the faces are a wonderful way to assess what the children are doing. Since the zoo is usually a first grade field trip, it’s wonderful that you have incorporated poetry as a writing tool to address such a high interest topic.

Wow! Your first graders did an excellent job writing their I poems. I really enjoyed reading them. I am quite impressed. Have fun at the zoo!

Your lesson outline was concise and straight forward. It would be easy for other teachers to use and mimic.

Amy,
Your poetry assignment is awesome. I love the way that you include the books about tigers. Your students will enjoy seeing their work published in a classroom book. It will be a valuable asset in your classroom. Great Job!

Thank you for sharing your animal I poems! They are so creative and informative. I always love how original I poems can be. Even though the kids used the same format, they are all so different! I am actually using animal I poems as part of my poetry unit, so it was helpful to see some of your examples!

Amy! I loved your students’ Tiger I Poems… very well done and creative… I loved how you did the paw print background…nice touch! I used I Poems for my unit, too, and it amazes me how well they are writing with these. The research really sparked a lot of the ideas, but they really let their imaginations go. I hope you had fun with it, I did! I commented on my blog, but I loved your multigenre presentation. I’m a NASCAR fan, too… so can relate. Your book was amazing and I loved the trophy idea. Great job! Kari
